The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, land contracts, deeds and other previous hit papers of the Kelley family next hit. Includes diaries kept by Alfred S. Kelley while residing on Kelley's Island, concerning local events and the Civil War; diary kept by Hermon A. Kelley while attending school on the island; criminal-docket book of Addison Kelley, justice of the peace; and statements on the condition of Kelley's Island Wine Company. Other persons represented include Datus, Hannah and Sara Kelley.

 Abstract:  George E. Dunbar, a farm laborer from Newburgh, Ohio, enlisted in Company B, Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, at Camp Wade in Cleveland, Ohio, in August 1861. Trained at Camp Dennison, Ohio, his company left for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in January 1862, Dunbar having been appointed sergeant and later quartermaster sergeant. While the regiment was defending the Kansas and Missouri borders during the Civil War, Dunbar became ill and was discharged on October 2, 1862, returning after a lengthy journey home via wagon and train to Newburgh. The collection consists of a single volume containing a chronicle of Dunbar's service in Company B, Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, from January to October 1862, and an anonymous entry, dated February 29, 1864, concerning a business trip to Cleveland.

His sons, Reuben, Henry, and Peter Jr., entered the judiciary, ministry and politics respectively and were affiliated with Burton Academy, Western Reserve College and the Atlantic and Great Western Railway Company. the collection consists of correspondence of family members and miscellaneous papers relating to Western Reserve College, Burton Academy, the Atlantic and Great Western Railway and the early history of Burton, Ohio.

 Abstract:  Alfred Mewett was the registrar of the Cleveland School of Art (1925-1943) and dean of the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute of Cleveland, Ohio (1930-1953). The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, account books, deeds, newspaper clippings, and other papers reflecting Mewett's interest in the local history and early settlements of the area around Gates Mills, Ohio, in the Western Reserve. The bulk of the collection consists of notes and articles written by Mewett on many historical subjects, including genealogical notes and accounts of interviews with and recollections of old settlers.

 Abstract:  Charles H. Anderton (b. 1844) of Bedford, Ohio, was soldier in Company D, the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was wounded and captured on May 27, 1864 near Altoona, Georgia. His whereabouts were reported as unknown at the end of the war. He participated in the battles of Tullahoma, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga, and, later, served with Sherman in Georgia. The collection consists of a Civil War diary, communication from the War Department to Anderton's father, receipt for money wired home, and a scrap claimed to be from Anderton's brigade flag.

Volume 2 continues with January 1, 1863 to May 4, 1864, and also contains some later observations about his regiment written after 1905. Volume 3 contains entries from May 5, 1864 to November 24, 1864.

 Abstract:  Wells A. Bushnell (1839-1907) was born in Trumbull County, Ohio. He enlisted in 1861 as a private for three years in the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry at Orwell, Ohio, and was appointed a corporal soon thereafter. He was captured in 1862 at Catlett Station, Virginia, and spent ten days in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia, before being exchanged. He was appointed a sergeant in Company A, Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry on January 1, 1863, and subsequently served as a quartermaster sergeant and orderly sergeant in Company A throughout 1863 and 1864. He was promoted to second lieutenant November 12, 1864, and then to first lieutenant January 31, 1865, in Company E of the Sixth Ohio. Bushnell resigned from service May 28, 1865. The Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry saw heavy action throughout the American Civil War. Originating at Orwell, Ohio, and surrounding areas, it was one of two cavalry regiments raised by Senator Benjamin F. Wade and Congressman John Hutchins of Ohio. The Sixth entered the war in June 1862 during the pursuit of Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley campaign. Throughout the war, the Sixth participated in numerous battles and engagements, including Cross Keys, Luray Court House, Warrenton, 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Aldie, Middleburg, Upperville, Rapidan Station, Bristoe Station, Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern, Cold Harbor, Trevilians' Station, Malvern Hill, Dinwiddie Court House, Five Forks, and Appomattox. The Sixth was present at the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox. The collection consists of a bound volume compiled and written in longhand by Wells A. Bushnell concerning his service in and the history of the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. It also contains notes, a newspaper clipping, and a ribbon removed form the bound volume. The memoir documents the movements, actions, and battles in which the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry participated from 1862-1865, including the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Cross Keys, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Five Forks, and Appomattox. It describes other aspects of the war, including camp life of the soldiers, troop movements and transportation, and Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. The memoir also includes a roster of officers and enlisted men of Company A of the Sixth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, which details their military service and in many cases notes their death dates. This bound volume was removed from MS 2152 Regimental Papers of the Civil War, Container 17, Bound Volume 1, for this microfilm reproduction.

 Abstract:  The Sohl Family is a Cleveland, Ohio, family of German-Americans, descended from Johann Georg Sohl (anglicized to George Sohl) who settled in Cleveland in 1840. His son, Gustav, married Mary Goodrich, whose father, George Elliott Goodrich, served in the 124th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War and was one of the soldiers assigned to escort the body of President Lincoln from Washington to Illinois. His grandson, Ralph William Sohl, was an engineer for a tire and rubber company. The collection consists of George Sohl's passport and related papers, his will, Sohl family correspondence, deeds and other records relating to property in Egg Harbor, N.J., cemetery lot purchase records, birth and death certificates for Ralph William Sohl, and Goodrich family papers, including a marriage certificate, civil war correspondence, and a copy of the order for troops to accompany Lincoln's body to Illinois. Included in the correspondence is a letter from George Goodrich expressing his feelings about the assassination of Lincoln.

He was an amateur historian and wrote numerous short stories about his childhood home in Tuscarawas County. His second wife, Beza (Boynton) Kaiser, also wrote stories about the early history of Tuscarawas County. Their children were Ella Kaiser Carruth and John Boynton Kaiser. The collection consists of diaries of Peter Henry Kaiser, writings by various Kaiser family members, correspondence, a class roll book, an account book, genealogical notes on the Kaiser, Boynton and Culver families, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, land records, and miscellaneous materials. The collection deals primarily with the personal lives of Peter Henry Kaiser and his family. Included are some historical materials on Tuscarawas County and three letters Peter Henry Kaiser wrote during the Civil War.

Bascom's son, Gustavus, fought in the Civil War and became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army. The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, and genealogical and autobiographical material.
